- Summary
- Black has been a legal practitioner for some 30 years, and has taught at several colleges and universities--including The Citadel. Drawing on lawsuits from the 1990s of veterans Patricia Johnson, Elizabeth Lacy, Angela Chapman, of Shannon Faulkner, and of Nancy Mellette, whose suit was folded into Faulkner's, he demonstrates how their experiences are representative of the traditional "good ol' boy" way of life in South Carolina. The cases are examined within the wider context of political, economic, and social life unique to South Carolina, and are noteworthy for having advanced the laws protecting the professional interests of women. In providing an account of personal reasons and motives for entering a protracted civil rights litigation and the potential consequences when an attorney zealously represents a client against a powerful defendant, the text explores many issues faced by legal practitioners and students on a daily basis concerning professional ethics and strategies.
