- Speech of the Honorably Judge Gaston, delivered at the North Carolina Constitutional Convention, presumably in 1835. The preface to the speech indicated that the 32nd section regarding a religious test, was being used to "rouse a spirit of religious persecution". A well-respected orator and Catholic, Gaston's speech argued against this section. In a final note at the end of this document, the amendment substituting "Christian" for "Protestant" was passed by vote of the Convention
