Summary
John Gay wrote this ballad opera in 1728 at the suggestion of his friend Jonathan Swift, who thought that "A Newgate pastoral might make a pretty sort of thing." Indeed, it seemed to suit the English taste of the time better than Handel's heroic operas. This special studio recording is true to the original. All 69 18th-century ballads are included and the satiric, biting edge stands uncompromised. Roger Daltrey, lead singer of "The Who," is the villainous Macheath and Academy Award nominee Bob Hoskins treats us to a cameo appearance
