Summary
An examination of the role of nuclear weapons in Europe during the 1970's and 1980's, this program considers the impact of Soviet strategic nuclear parity on the credibility of the U.S. nuclear umbrella for the defense of Europe. This program also explores the controversy surrounding the NATO decision to deploy Pershing II and cruise missiles in Europe and the subsequent negotiations to withdraw all Soviet and U.S. intermediate range missiles from the continent -- the "zero option."
