- Summary
- This strange and powerful blend of historical fact and dreamlike imagination captures both the charisma and the murderous madness of the young Benito Mussolini. In the years before World War I, in the northern city of Trent, he and Ida Dalser, daughter of a minor aristocrat, carried on a passionate affair. He's a charismatic anticlerical socialist, interventionist, and journalist who dreams of glory. She's a bourgeois who sells all her possessions to fund his newspaper. They married in secret, she bore him a son, and when he returned from World War I with another wife, she became an inconvenient woman. She would neither go away nor be quiet, so Mussolini had her sequestered in mental asylums where she lived out her days, she protested her imprisonment until the end, as Il Duce scrubbed from his life and from history. The film offers a devastating parallel between the rise of fascism and the bullying manner of Mussolini's personal relationships. Bend one inconvenient woman to his will and rewrite the truth, or bend a whole nation to one's will and rewrite history: The only difference is that of scale
