Summary

Ilona is beautiful. Possessing a strong voice, she earns her living by singing. Through her music, Ilona hopes to leave behind her life of poverty, and to leave the dangerous environment in which she lives. To do so, she works relentlessly while her mother takes care of her sisters, and cares for Ilona's own three-year old daughter. When Ilona comes to see her family, her mother angrily reproaches her. What is she doing, always out and about? Why doesn't she spend more time with her child? Her mother doesn't believe, like Ilona does, that one day she will succeed and support the family by her singing. Ilona also faces the pressures of the market. Her producers criticize her too, but for just the opposite reason: for spending too much time at home. And they want her to write and sing songs in English, which she cannot speak, as they believe they are more likely to be successful
