- Burke and Wills were the Lewis and Clark of Australia -- except that the Australians' expedition was a disaster. Although Burke and Wills crossed Australia overland and explored much of its vast unmapped interior, their elaborate precautions and preparations proved futile in the face of the elements. It was, of course, the human element that made all the difference and sealed the fate of the expedition
